There’s a truly awful story today of another teenager who has committed suicide due to bullying, this time in Canada.
I don’t know about Canada, but over here I expect many or most people will have seen this story covered in a section of the press we know too well.
I hope there are no crocodile tears among some of the writers.
They play a leading role in bullying culture that so many pick up on. They give it credence and they set a tone. At the same time they parade a high minded sanctimony that crawls with hypocrisy.
The hatred of Muslims based on deliberate distortions?
The huge amount of body-related anxiety among females?
Individual cases deserve our sympathy and our prayers, if we do that sort of thing. There will be more than enough froth about the bullies.
When will cultural factors get a look in?
Not from the pus filled rags who delight in the gory details of every horror they can, or who spied on murder victims for extra salacious tit-bits to make money.
Not from those that demonised the Hillsbrough dead and serve up daily doses of “1984”-style 2 Minute Hate pieces against the jobless, migrants or any target group that happens to be fashionable to sneer at and blame.
The same people who told you this news are probably the same scum that love to bully. They create bullies. Bullying makes them tick. I struggle to figure how those who buy this stuff can have real self respect.
It’s only logical to conclude that many readers must wallow in the leery lurid hate themselves – their mental toxicity is part of what creates situations like this.
Who hears the lies of an “everyday” bully in a school, workplace or community? 10 people, 20? A hundred via Facebook or Twitter? Even those that hear them may not take them seriously.
Who sees a tabloid bullies lies? The 10s of millions who walk into any shop selling papers. Sure, they may not think they take it seriously. How many people nearly puff out their chest in saying they don’t believe what they read in the papers? How many of the same people, minutes later, will be spouting some bilge they read in the papers?
Please take a proper stand against bullies. Boycott the bullying tabloids. Speak out against them at every appropriate opportunity.
It’s only small, but I often spend a few minutes a day turning bunches of papers to show their back pages if key words like “SPONGERS” or negative twists on “IMMIGRANTS” are on the front page.
Sorry to get a bit preachy, it’s important and not said enough.
RIP Amanda. Love and light to her always, and to those who love her.
